5 Imaginative Rock Painting Ideas

"Rock Art! Painting and Crafting with the Humble Pebble" by Denise Scicluna inspired me for a 5th week of rock painting.

An imaginative idea is painting a colorful circle first and then adding the mandala design. (I need more patience & practice to make mandalas on rocks! They always end up lopsided and become doodles instead.)

Your imagination can run wild because colorful ladybugs are one of the simplest designs to paint on any shape or size of rock.

These pebble messages are tokens of faith, peace, and love and can be carried in a pocket. Any meaningful words, names or quotes can be painted on pebbles.

Black and white paint gives this imaginative owl design a clean, graphic look and complements the pebbles' natural colors.

These colorful fish rocks used two of my favorite things - dots and metallic paint.

Before & After Painted Rocks: Things with Wings

These are a few of my favorite winged things.

Three, smooth, dark-colored Mexican beach pebbles were primed with white acrylic paint and transformed into Angel Babies.

One pitted and one smooth rock became pigs with wings garden decor.

I purchased these Caribbean beach pebbles by the bag and love them for rock painting. The stones are smooth and many of the shapes are perfect for owls.

A large, 10-pound rock was the perfect shape for a life-size hen.

What's a hen without some chicks? Egg-shaped stones became my version of "peeps."

Do-Over Painted Rocks OR How To Re-Paint Rocks and Stones

Oops...the painted rocks shaving cream experiment did not turn out like I expected.

The shape and texture of these rocks were too good to toss aside.

Time for a do over!

I just covered the shaving cream rocks with solid white acrylic and re-painted them.

Painted rocks are very forgiving. If you don't like something you've painted on a rock or stone, just cover with a few coats of white acrylic paint (or any other color) and start over.

Don't be afraid to experiment with rock painting!

Don't you think these are much better?

Rock Painting Ideas: Owls

I enjoy painting owls and owlets on rocks and stones.

I'm always looking for different ways to paint owls on rocks and have a new Pinterest board: Ideas for Painted Owls Rocks

The next time I paint stone owls, my Pinterest board will be a reference for different feathers, style, or rock painting technique.

Inspiration for Painting Owls on Rocks

Calendars are a great resource for rock painting inspiration.

This free owl calendar is chock full of owl designs created by various artists. (Respect the artists and use the images for inspiration rather than copying their work.)

Owl Lover 2013 Calendar

If you love owls but don't paint rocks, check out the calendar anyway. It's fun to customize by choosing from 43 different owls.

Free Rock Painting Lesson - Simple Owls

Painted owl rocks are very popular and this easy, free project has unlimited possibilities.

I painted this owl in 10 minutes using this tutorial.

My painted rock owl

I used 3-D fabric paint for the whites of the owl's eyes

Metallic purple & silver craft paint was used for this owl

Other ideas for painting these rock owls:
  • vary the colors
  • outline the feathers and body with black or a darker color
  • fill in the beak with yellow
  • instead of circles on the chest, try another design
  • vary the size of the eyes
  • attach magnets to small stones

This project is simple enough for children and beginning rock painters and is a great idea when you need quick, home-made painted rock gifts.
